The TCU: Bridging the gap to home

The TCU at ÂÜÀòÉç Jacksonville provides short-term, medically-supervised rehabilitation for patients recovering from serious illness or injury. This 56-bed recovery care unit is designed to bridge the gap between hospital care and home in a supportive, home-like environment.

Key features include:

  • Private rooms with personal space and comfort
  • Average of two hours of therapy per day across disciplines
  • Multidisciplinary team including physicians, therapists, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and case managers
  • Comprehensive support including wound care, IV medications and nutritional guidance
  • Collaborative goal-setting that includes patient and family input
  • Focused care for safe transition to home or the next level of rehabilitation

Specialty services in rehabilitation

We offer a wide range of specialty services across our acute care and TCU settings, tailored to meet the complex needs of patients at all stages of their hospital stay and recovery.

Our specialized rehabilitation services include:

  • Neurological rehabilitation (stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury)
  • Cognitive communication and cognitive therapy
  • Swallowing assessment and intervention including VFSS (videofluoroscopic swallow study) and FEES (fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing)
  • Functional mobility and fall prevention
  • Dysphagia management by trained swallowing specialists
  • Early mobility protocols in the ICU and step-down units — including mobilization for ventilated patients
  • Therapy after elective surgeries, including education on movement precautions and recovery protocols
  • Custom thermoplastic splints, orthotics and positioning devices for support, protection and improved function
  • Neonatal therapy and lactation support services
  • Positioning and skin integrity programs to prevent complications and promote healing
  • Therapy services and evaluations in the emergency room, including the trauma bay
  • Specialized therapy for head, neck and throat cancers, including swallowing, speech and mobility support
  • Care for orthopaedic injuries, both elective (joint replacement) and traumatic (fractures, dislocations)

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS)
  • Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialists (CRS-S)
  • AOTA Board Certification in Adult Physical Dysfunction
  • Lymphedema Therapists (certified and non-certified)
  • Swallowing Specialists (proficient in VFSS and FEES)
  • Certified Neonatal Therapist (CNT)
  • Lactation Specialists supporting postpartum and medically complex patients
