Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery

Hernia care and abdominal wall reconstruction
The patient will undergo a complete history and physical exam with a hernia specialist. Imaging, such as a CT scan or MRI may be performed to aid in diagnosis and assist with surgical planning. Surgeons will then discuss various surgical options with patients and form an individualized plan.
For many standard hernias, surgical repair can be performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to go home the same day and get back to their daily activities as quickly as possible. For hernias that are more complex, additional medical care and consultations may be necessary prior to hernia repair. In some instances, muscle relaxants may be administered by our interventional radiology specialists to promote pre-surgical assistance with closure of the abdominal wall.
Our hernia surgeons also work closely with other specialists from teams including surgical oncology, colorectal surgery and gynecology, to provide multidisciplinary care for a wide variety of conditions. A hernia nurse navigator will assist patients through the process from their initial visit to their post-surgical care.
