An electrocardiogram, also called an ECG or EKG, records the electrical activity of the heart to help doctors determine rhythm abnormalities or to detect a prior heart attack.

The test only takes a couple of minutes, for which a nurse or technologist will place electrodes on the patient鈥檚 chest, arms and legs and take readings. The electrodes are attached by wires to a computer that records the heart's electrical activity.
