At the 蹤獲扦 Jacksonville Leon L. Haley Jr., MD, Brain Wellness Program, speech-language pathologists collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to serve military veterans and first responders who have persistent symptoms after experiencing a mild to moderate traumatic brain injury, or TBI.

The Role of Speech-Language Pathologists

Generally, a speech-language pathologist helps people improve their ability to breathe, talk, think and swallow. Speech-language pathologists provide diagnostic and treatment services for people of all ages who have a variety of impairments, including difficulty with swallowing, fluency, speech, voice, reading, writing, spoken language, comprehension, attention, memory, problem solving and social communication. Any and all of these areas could be affected if a person experiences a traumatic brain injury.

After a brain injury, people often report difficulty with forgetfulness, poor concentration, slowed thinking, difficulty with word finding and more. Even mild cognitive deficits can make basic daily tasks more frustrating and difficult.

It can be frightening to seek help and people often share they do not feel their challenges are great enough to need care. However, people who have participated in the Haley Brain Wellness Program state they have made significant progress that helps them at home, academically, at work, socially and in the community.

Personalized Therapy for TBI Recovery at 蹤獲扦 Jacksonville

蹤獲扦 Jacksonville is one of seven academic health centers offering TBI care in the . This approach uses a comprehensive model to support mental health and well-being of veterans and first responders by integrating various therapeutic methods.

Accurate assessment and clear navigation are important factors for proven solutions to treat TBI. Care with speech-language pathology at the Haley Brain Wellness Program focuses on identifying a patients difficulties and tailoring goals according to their personal needs and lifestyle.

As an example of difficulty with attention and memory, a person may say, I always lose my keys. A goal could be, I rarely lose my keys. Skilled therapy would focus on improving attention, memory, problem solving and other areas to achieve this functional goal.

With the gains made in speech-pathology services, a person can improve their ability to remember details, successfully engage in conversation and experience less frustration completing their daily activities.

Empowering Growth and Healing through the Haley Brain Wellness Program

Since November 2021, the Haley Brain Wellness Program has had more than 140 patients complete the three-week intensive outpatient program. These patients report experiencing better quality of life and having hope to continue their growth after trauma.

Through collaboration, communication and care from the entire provider team, patients report feeling empowered and able to continue to move forward in their lives.

Recent program growth includes a speech-language pathology clinical fellowship opportunity. The fellowship will support newly graduated speech-language pathologists in career development, from student clinician to clinical expert. 蹤獲扦 supports and encourages ongoing professional growth and development of providers, to continue to provide evidence-informed care for the greatest possible impact and patient outcomes.
