Finding Hope in Sound Again
A 蹤獲扦 patient has his hearing restored with a minimally invasive procedure
For more than a decade, 49-year-old Guillermo Cordoba lived in a world growing steadily quieter as his hearing declined. At first, the change was bearable, with a missing word here and a muffled sound there. However, the hearing loss soon began to affect every part of his life.
At home, my wife thought I wasnt paying attention, Cordoba said. At work, I was worried people thought I wasnt listening. I just couldnt hear them. I even started reading lips because it was the only way to keep up with conversations.
Cordobas career in customer service required constant communication with customers and colleagues. Over-the-counter hearing devices and prescribed hearing aids offered little help.
I had the volume turned all the way up, and it still wasnt loud enough for me to hear properly, Cordoba said. I thought Id have to accept losing my hearing, learn sign language and give up my job.
A Turning Point
Cordobas search for help led him to several physicians and discouraging experiences. Everything changed when he was referred to 蹤獲扦 Jacksonville, where he met Nirmal Thapa, MD, an otology and neurotology physician, and Cayce Jabour, AuD, CCC-A, an audiologist. Together, they approached Cordobas case differently than the others.
Thapa and Jabour explained the various options to Cordoba, including him in every decision, and treating him like a partner in his own care. Cordoba felt heard for the first time.
Jabour remembers their first appointment vividly.
Mr. Cordoba came in frustrated with hearing aids that werent helping him, Jabour said. When I placed a bone conduction simulator on him, his eyes lit up as he was able to hear so much. That moment was powerful for both of us.
Understanding the Diagnosis
Cordobas case wasnt straightforward. His hearing organ, the inner ear, was working well, but his middle ear was blocking sound. Imaging and exploratory surgery revealed that traditional repairs wouldnt solve the problem.
Its almost like a roadblock in the middle ear, Jabour said. Sound simply couldnt pass through to reach the inner ear. His case was unusual, and to this day, we cant pinpoint exactly why it developed. We knew surgery alone wouldnt restore his hearing. He needed another solution.
That solution was a bilateral Osia implant, a bone-anchored hearing system that bypasses the middle ear entirely. Instead of sending sound waves through the damaged area, the implant delivers sound through gentle vibrations conducted through bone directly to the inner ear, where hearing is processed.
Each implant has a small internal component surgically placed under the skin and attached to the bone behind the ear, and an external sound processor that connects magnetically. The external processor captures sound, converts it into vibrations and sends it through the bone to the inner ear.
The Procedure and Recovery
When Dr. Thapa explained everything to me, I trusted him completely, Cordoba said. His bedside manner was out of this world. He gave me choices, not orders. We worked as a team.
Thapa performed the surgery to place the implants in both of Cordobas ears. It was an outpatient procedure, and after a short, four-week recovery, Cordoba returned to the audiology department for activation.
When Cordobas implants were activated, it was an unforgettable moment. When the device was turned on, it was like a miracle, Cordoba said. I could hear clearly conversations, laughter and everyday sounds I had been missing. It gave me my life back.
Jabour added, For many patients, the word surgery feels overwhelming. But this is minimally invasive, with a quick recovery. Most patients are back to their daily lives within weeks.
For Cordoba, that meant returning to his family and career without fear of missing out on the world around him.
Life After the Implant
Cordoba continues to thrive. He enjoys time with his wife, four stepsons and five grandchildren. He swims regularly, using a waterproof kit that allows him to hear even in the pool. His confidence has returned at work.
Besides my family, Dr. Thapa and Dr. Jabour were my biggest support system, Cordoba said. They didnt just treat me like a patient. They cared about me as a person, asking about my family and my life. That meant so much.
A Message of Hope
Jabour sees Cordobas success story as an example of whats possible for others living with hearing loss.
Not every case is the same, but with the right diagnosis and treatment, there are ways to restore hearing and improve quality of life. Patients dont have to suffer in silence, Jabour said.
For Cordoba, the outcome speaks for itself. Im grateful every day, Cordoba said. This has been a miracle, and I want others to know that they dont have to stop living because of hearing loss.
