The 蹤獲扦 Jacksonville Office of Nursing Research recently earned the Top Research Poster award, outperforming 27 other research projects presented at the 2024 annual meeting of the Florida Organization of Nurse Leaders. This special distinction was awarded for a pilot randomized control trial that studied the effect of receiving a nutritional probiotic supplement after cardiovascular surgery.
The nurse-led research was conducted by Deborah Brabham, PhD, RN, CNE; Erica Liner, MSN, RN, CMSRN; Sarajane Brownford, MSN, RN, CCRN; Tamera Boneta, DNP, RN, CCRN, CNE; Thomas Zeyl, MD; and Erol Belli, MD. The study examined the effect of probiotic milk on postoperative constipation, hospital length of stay, and side effects experienced as compared to the standard regimen of laxatives and stool softeners. The study revealed that probiotic milk did not significantly offer faster constipation relief yet did significantly reduce the hospital length of stay and offered less severe side effects than laxatives.
In addition to the research presentations, the conference included speakers and discussion sessions for continuing education, drawing participants from 142 organizations with the theme Racing into the Future of Nursing Leadership Fueled by Purpose, Passion, and Possibility. The conference was held in Daytona Beach from Nov. 6 - 8.
Fourteen co-investigators participated on the 蹤獲扦 Jacksonville study: Rebecca Brittain, RN; Morgan Brucato, BSN, RN; Katherine Ganzhom, BSN,RN; Gabriela Gonzalez, RN; Ashley Graham, BSN, RN; Rebecca Hill, BSN, RN; Brian Holloway, RN; Tiffany James, BSN, RN, SCRN; Susan Maurer, MS, RD; Valarie Platt, DNP, RN; Michelle Shaw, MSN, RN, CCRN-K; Ashley Stark, BSN, RN, CCRN; Stephen Tan, PharmD, BCCCP; and Xiaoxi Zhang, PhD.
